Our history

In 1857, Kährs is founded in Nybro, where Johan Kähr the elder sets up a shop crafting, wooden utility goods.

In 1919, Gustaf Kähr, grandson of the founder, takes over the company which becomes an innovative producer of wooden doors, toys, furniture and floors with a focus on finding efficient ways of using the sustainable wood raw material.

In 1941, Kährs is awarded a patent for the invention of today’s modern engineered hardwood floor, the multilayer floor. This construction is, until this day the global standard in all parquet flooring.

In 1958, the first factory-lacquered floors are produced, based on methods introduced by Kährs. Previously floors were installed and sanded before being lacquered on site.

In the 1980’s, Kährs starts a global expansion, starting with several markets in Europe, including the Nordic region, as well as the US. In the middle of the 1990’s, Kährs also moves into East European and Asian markets.

In 1984, Kährs is the first flooring manufacturer to move away from utilizing solvent-based lacquers in its production, having initiated an environmental program long before this became general practice.

In 1995, Kährs introduces a new generation of more affordable wood veneer floors utilizing less raw-material while still being a real wooden floor: Linnea, featuring a thin surface layer of wood, but still hard, durable and easy to install.

In 1997, Kährs gains the ISO 14001 environmental certification. Waste products from forest felling provide district heating for the community around the factory. The ash that remains is returned to the forest as fertilizer.

In 1999, Kährs introduces the world's first parquet floor with the glueless Woodloc® joint. The technology is seen as revolutionary, resulting in easier, quicker laying with a perfect result.

In 2009, Kährs launches the next level of the Woodloc® joint system – Woodloc® 5S. These new joints make installation even faster and more flexible, while producing a stronger floor.

In 2012, Kährs & Karelia-Upofloor merges, creating Kährs Group, a world-leading flooring company now with an offering in both residential and commercial flooring targeting healthcare and education with sustainable PVC-free resilient flooring.

In 2013, Kährs introduces a broad range of 2-layer parquet flooring including various herringbone designs.

In 2014, Kährs strengthens it sustainable offer by applying and being granted the Nordic Swan Ecolabel for the first time on its wood floors. Today Kährs offers more than 200 floors certified with the Nordic Swan Ecolabel and has continued to certify their floors with relevant, and stringent Ecolabels globally and locally.

In 2019, Kährs expands its offer of flooring solutions to also include Luxury Vinyl Tiles (LVT). Applying the knowledge of wood material, designs have been developed mimicking the natural variation of wood in combination with properties such as waterproof, and dent- and wear resistance in a durable, designed LVT flooring solution for the home.

In 2021, Kährs Life Essential is launched introducing a new generation of durable real wood flooring with properties close to those of durable vinyl flooring, combining the best of two worlds where the beauty of the wood meets the practical properties of a vinyl floor.

In 2022, Kährs presents two new flooring solutions which are both Nordic Eco-labeled: Kährs Zero & Green, a PVC-free plastic flooring with both recycled and biobased content as well as Kährs Aware, which consists of recycled fibers from the textile industry while looking and feeling like a wood floor with a high durability.

In 2023, Kährs forms a five-year partnership within the cutting-edge area of Neurodesign to better understand how a room design, and the materials within promote healing, learning and creativity. This newfound knowledge, Kährs will apply in future innovation and product development of floors to continue to promote health, performance and well-being.

In 2023, Kährs establishes a take-back program enabling recirculation of installation waste of Kährs Zero flooring. With this program waste can recovered and converted into new flooring products.

In 2024, Kährs unveils the Estate collection - the first high-quality wood flooring collection to be produced in the USA based on knowledge built within Kährs over generations.

In 2025, Kährs Infinity is launched complementing Kährs PVC-free plastic flooring offer. Kährs Infinity contains up to 60-90% recycled content, and as a more affordable alternative to Kährs Zero it has a high performance in commercial spaces within Healthcare & Education second only to the performance of Kährs Zero.
